Spanish 1/2
This is a two-semester course that serves as an introduction to the Spanish language by means of the communicative approach. The student encounters the basic grammatical structure of the language in its cultural context through a variety of activities, and carries on simple conversations. General emphasis is on listening and speaking. The course is designed for the college preparatory student and meets the UC “e” foreign language requirement.

Spanish 3/4
This two-semester course is the second year of study for the Spanish language. It is a continuation and expansion of the basic language patterns of Spanish 1C and 2C. Emphasis is on increasing communicative skills and cultural awareness of all people who speak Spanish. The student must have received at least a “C” in Spanish 1C and 2C to be enrolled. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

Spanish 5/6
This is a two-semester course for students who have completed two years of study of the language with a “C” or better in Spanish 3C and 4C. The student should attain a mastery of fundamental Spanish grammar and should be able to converse with a minimum of grammatical errors. The students are expected to participate freely in all classroom activities. They will attempt simple compositions related to daily experiences or reading matter of the course. Reading selections include works by recognized Spanish authors. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

Spanish 7/8
This is a two-semester course for the college preparatory student who received at least a “C” grade in Spanish 5C and 6C. It is an advanced study of the language with the emphasis on communication. Students read cultural materials, novels, short stories and plays, as well as newspapers and magazines in Spanish. There is outside reading and conversational practice. Students prepare oral presentations and skits in Spanish. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

Spanish 5/6 Honors
A two-semester course conducted exclusively in Spanish that requires greater depth, quality, and linguistic acumen from the student than the college preparatory curriculum. Students should demonstrate above average command of sentence structure and all basic grammar in oral and written language by the end of the course. Course requirements include, varied and consistent oral participation, weekly addition of a significant number of words to the student’s recognition and usage vocabulary, regular study of literary works of recognized merit, and writing development assignments. ***Prerequisite required or equivalent, and teacher recommendation. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

Spanish 7/8 Honors
A course conducted exclusively in Spanish that requires greater depth, quality, and linguistic acumen from the student than the college preparatory curriculum. Students should demonstrate near fluency in conversation, comprehension, and writing skills by the end of the course. Course requirements include, varied and consistent oral participation, weekly addition of a significant number of words to the student’s recognition and usage vocabulary, regular study of literary works of recognized merit, and writing development. ***Prerequisite required or equivalent, and teacher recommendation. This course meets the University of California “e” foreign language and “g” elective requirements.

AP Spanish Language
A course in the college preparatory program designed to lead to an understanding of our total heritage through a study of English literature and the great books of the world. College preparation and essay writing are emphasized. This course meets the University of California “b” English and “g” elective requirements.
